One afternoon at the end of May,
and the soft wind on Main Street chilled me slightly
Alone at a sidewalk table,
smiling at the goings on of the day
Waiting for someone I've never met. Could be anyone
I peered in the window and could see myself faintly
I don't think I waited too long, in fact.

From the coffee shop, the angel appeared at the stairs
Not painted pretty, not false the way images are,
No colors adorned her lips or face,
seemingly she had no cares
I couldn't believe this angel had come to meet me,
just bizarre
Not a photo or a painting
Time just stopped

I rose so fast I think my heart dropped
I looked in her eyes and my breathing stopped
it's possible my eyes may have popped
I shook her hand and we sat down.

And as she spoke, my whole self stirred
and she hung on my every word
She asked me things I can't tell my mother
Were there two fools at the table, or two potential lovers
Certainly, there was an angel
We had a smoke then parted ways.
I can't write a short message to an angel anyways
To express myself, I gotta be me

The next day I sensed the angel flee.
and what we might have been, we just ain't gonna be.
